A con by any other name would still smell as sweet

It’s Wednesday and I want to talk about conventions.   I was sitting in a meeting drawing ninjas on people’s notepads when they weren’t looking when I started to think about some of the more oddly named conventions out there. Two of them stuck out in my mind.  The Wrath of Con, a Sci-Fi Convention in Florida and Naruto Star Trek Convention, an anime sci-fi convention also in Florida.

A fun concept for sure.  This got me thinking, if these two conventions could exist what other ones can, nah should, exist?  Well here is what I came up with.

Chaka-Con

Image from http://soulfunkjazz.wordpress.com/2009/01/07/This convention needs to exist because who wouldn’t want to spend three days talking about the queen of funk and soul, Chaka Khan.  I doubt any other convention would have as good a soundtrack.  People would be dancing in the aisles while waiting to get autographs from the original members of Chaka’s first band, Rufus.  Yes she is known for her empowering hit ‘I’m Every Woman’ but she also sang the theme song for Reading Rainbow.  We could even have LeVar Burton as a guest.image from The Seattle Weekly blog

Genghis-Con

Fierce!

I think a convention focused around a man such as Genghis Khan should attract many people to attend.  The con would be non-stop weapons in the dealers room, the cafe selling mutton with mead, and the foam weapons room would have less ‘foam’ in the title and more ’sharp-pointy-blades-of-death’ in it.  The staff could convince the convention center to bring in horses and there could be some full on reenactments right in the lobby!  Hell, the Red Cross could be on hand and just get a sponge out to collect all the blood caked on the walls.  Best of all you could get these guys as the band guest:

They’re even in cosplay!  They would fit in just fine.

Kon-Con

Image from ACParadise.comHe might not be from one of our shows but a convention devoted to a cute stuffed animal can’t be all that wrong.  It looks like an anime convention but its really more centered around people dressed up in fuzzy costumes and creeping the hell out of other people in the hotel or near by areas.  I mean a large group of random costume characters running around having fun.  What could possibly go wrong?

Brocktoon-Fest!: A Mr Belvedere Fan Expo

image from http://www.cfhf.net/lyrics/mr-belv.htm

I’m sure some of you are too young to remember the lovable show from the 1980’s known as Mr Belvedere but trust me, it deserves a con.  Way more than Alf ever would.  Some of you may at least recall Stewie from Family Guy signing the theme song in an episode.

But I digress.  All I’m saying is that a convention devoted to adding proper etiquette and protocol to your every day family environment can’t be that bad of an idea.  I’m sure everyone who would attend this would leave feeling more enriched with a better sense of how to take on life and all of it challenges.  And the fans can’t be THAT hardcore right?

That idea has crossed our minds before. Doesn’t look possible in 2009 but I’ll never say never.

    FUNi-Con Portland!

…Yeah, okay, maybe not. Our local anime con is awesome, but it’s tough to run a good event here– the convention center doesn’t have any decent hotels really, and there aren’t a lot of other good event spaces.

Which is a shame. I’ve always thought that Portland would be a great place for a big con in terms of being fully of crazy(-in-a-good-way) people.

To be honest I never have been to a con and I don’t think I ever will. I would have to go by myself and that wouldn’t be any fun.

These con suggestions made me giggle more than a little bit. ^_^

A Funi-Con would be sweet though, perhaps Seattle needs another con? SakuraCon is great but SakuraCon AND Funi-Con would be awesome!

Gah! King-Con. That one SO should have been included. That and I found this great chart like an hour after I posted that I would have loved to include with The Wrath of Con pic.

    Hong Con.

By the way, while you certainly don’t have the license to Bleach, you’ll be there to pick it up if Viz ever drops the ball, right? ;)

Adam S. the “KH(Ax)N” chart is just geekdom at it’s best-or-worst.

Oh my god, it’s the Mr. Belvedere SNL skit! How very topical. :)

Let me recall what the Mike Myers character said (I recorded the rerun of this on VHS):

“I should want to write him a letter saying how good he was in the episode where he teaches everyone how to cook… I SHOULDN’T have to write the letter on a death certificate.”

    lol.

Not that I’m totally impressed, but this is more than I expected for when I stumpled upon a link on Digg telling that the info is quite decent. Thanks.
