A day in the life of an Events Manager when not at a convention

Based on the number of comments on one of the last posts on the blog we see that you like knowing how things work behind the scenes.  To better feed that curiosity in this post you will see a little more of just that.  Today I will run you through a day in the life of an Events Manager.  Many people don’t know what an Events Manager does when not at a convention so here is a sneak peek at some of that.  From ‘answers the phone’ to ‘Get Walter out of the tree with a broom’ you won’t want to miss the excitement.

Wednesday April 29th

8:30am Got to work all jazzed up after listening to ‘Cheers to you!” on repeat with the windows down in rush hour traffic.  It’s just my little way of giving back.

8:45am check e-mails, blog posts, and anime news that I may have missed last night.

9:07am Make up fake spoilers for co-worker who is just starting Battlestar Galactica, enjoy the delicious agony.

9:15am On conference call with fall convention about initial negotiations for a possible large event and what guests and promotions would work best for both of us.

9:40am Sit down with PR Manager to talk about strategies for possible news announcements and if conventions need to be a part of it.

10:10am Go through anime DVD supply closet for new shows I need to watch.  Grab 20 Spanish languages DBZ DVD’s to sneak into outbound shipments when the interns aren’t looking.

10:30am Review annual convention budget for recent changes and double check everything is still on 100% fine to go forward with.

11:30am Create Anime Central packing list for crate shipment Friday.

11:53am Have heated hallway debate on which Star Wars character would most likely be an anime fan.

12:00pm lunch and catch-up on non-anime blogs

12:15pm Meet with different Brand Managers on plans for special events, screeners, and promotional items for summer conventions.

1:30pm Go through convention spring items to pull possible items to use for charity auctions.

2:00pm Work on finishing touches for Romeo x Juliet event items for Anime Boston

3:00pm Pull screeners, prizes, and promo items for ‘No Con Left Behind’ shipments coming up

3:45pm Toss 32 empty boxes on top of a few storage locker so the stack goes 25′ high.  Ask intern to break down boxes.

4:00pm Sit down with Marketing Director to get caught up with department planning and new things that popped this week.

4:30pm Goes over invoices to be sent to accounting for payment

4:50pm Put in service ticket with IT Department for a ‘Shiv-bot’ and make fun of Rojas’s hair.

5:00pm Send out request for Anime Boston Volunteers and send out DVDs to SakuraCon AC Paradise cosplayers and volunteers.

5:30pm Talk with Inventory about deliverable goods to Anime Central this coming weekend and well as FYE’s shipping timeline.

5:50pm Find a large flat cardboard box and threaten Operation Anime Manager that I will break dance unless she lets me have a few of her DVD’s from her supply room for convention prizes.

6:01pm has two Diet Mountain Dew’s, grabs macbook, and go home

Thanks for hanging out with me all day, I hope you had a good time.

Anime Central preview: coming soon! We are still working on a few final details for the show but we will be there and so should you.

Nothing like “Cheers to You” to get your day going.

Or to remind you how very alone you really are.

Luke Skywalker is totally the most likely anime fan out of the Star Wars bunch. He used to spend his days working on the farm, listening to stories of past wars, and dreaming for more action in his life. Total geek right there.

    Adam S. on says:

No one ever needs to see me dance. It will be uncool for 10 mile radius if I do.

Totally Luke. Han, Anakin, and Fett were also in the mix. :)

I can see Boba Fett being an anime fan. I mean he needs something to do when there are no bounty’s to go after and when his dad left on trips leaving him at Kamino only with the Kaminoans. Also he could have watched anime with his daughter Ailyn before he abandon her to go back to bounty hunting…..ok enough star wars geeking from me or i’ll go on for hours.

I wonder if your interns go crazy about the boxes? I wish I could work for you guys, but I doubt you need any physicists for anything.

Aw, man, see, I didn’t even THINK of the main humans when I was thinking of who would be an anime fan. But yeah, definitely Luke.

That said, I’m just going to drop this here on the floor nonchalantly and totally by accident: http://www.animevice.com/news/a-day-in-the-life-of-an-events-managers-stalker/1073/

Digging the SW Bounty Hunter love. I have a Fett tattoo so I can get into the geekyness of it all. On that note, if you can find the SW Manga that Dark Horse put out a while ago the ‘New Hope’ graphic novels are great.

Yea when one of our iterns (Joel) grabbed the first box they all fell on him. They were empty so it’s all good. I don’t think I heard any crying but hell, I closed the door behind me when I walked away.

lol, thanks for the love Gia. and no I don’t actually crank ‘cheers to you’ while driving to work but yes, it is a real product. Get one for your office today!

I think if I actually tried to play that in the office in Sausalito for my coworkers to hear, they would dump me in a garbage can, or some other jocks-hazing-geeks act. @_@

Adam: You should know better than to do something like that on your official blog right after that whole Gundam Unicorn announcement thing! Now regardless of what you tell me I’m going to speculate wildly!

I think all things Gundam are left to a certain other company. ^_^

Ah… ACen. I was promised that I would get to go if I kept my grades up, and I’ve more than done so. And yet, not going. My wonderful little sob story for you all to enjoy…

I get to go anime shopping instead, though, and I’ll definitely get some FUNimation series! ^_^
