FUNimation’s initial lineup includes:

While we’re on the topic of ANN, what do you mainly use the site for? Anime news? Cast lists? Japanese news? Release dates?

ANN’s news and info is all the site’s good for.

The reviews are not as reliable; ranging from honest to “why did they waste money on this anyway” to “licking someone’s boots clean.”

And NO. DO NOT. I REPEAT: DO NOT GO INTO THEIR FORUMS. Along with #chan, the AnimeOnDVD forums, and the lot of the animu blogs; it’s the most evil, uncompromising, “pull you down so you can be depressed as well” -esque places to be on the web.

Ramjet says to Dirge, “Yeah? Well…” I’ll wish you guys luck with ANN. :P

That’s a nice lineup of shows. As far as ANN goes, I use it for news, reviews, cast lists, and forum interaction. It also seems I may be using it to watch some anime as well!

I only use ANN for cast lists and VA info if I’m stumped on a familiar-sounding voice that I can’t quite put my finger on

I’ve been the guy who generally puts up your cast info on the majority of your titles, I get your DVD’s and put up the info so that people can find out whose in it. Then I sit back and enjoy your titles. So yes I am very much a super fan of Anime. Only one request I have and that is if you can possibly post the first two episodes or so of Romeo X Juliet on Friday because I am dying to see the show.

Tyrenol: I think all reviews suck, everyone has diffrent tast in anime.

ANN is great for minute by minute news and updates, but their reviews leave much to be desired. I would also like to see formal solicitations actually get posted on their site in addition to mania.com.

I don’t like when ANN review thing, because things that are good they hate in and then they rag on in hard and people listen to that, then end up missing something go because of there unprofessional Reviews. I hated what they said about Murder Princess in there shelf life thing they do every week.

I like ANN’s tagline for their video player.

    Fast. Easy. Legal.

    It’s how I like my women. j/k

I mostly use it for news. Honestly, I’ve been waiting to see the cast listings for several FUNi shows up. Also, their reviews and special features offer a lot for anime fans. Certainly a site I rely on…

I use it mostly for the very thorough encyclopedia. I care who voiced what, and which shows had music written by which person and which studio did what. ANN is excellent for keeping it all together and being accurate 99.9999999% of the time.

I also use it for news, but there are a lot of really good news sites as well as direct sources where I can get news too.

I’m on ANN a lot but I can’t fault the negative opinion of their reviews at all. A few of the reviewers give even-handed ones but quite a few are just brutally negative and biased. The whole thing reminds me of movie reviews. No one who likes horror movies should read a “professional” movie review of one if they actually want to have normal blood pressure.

Not a place for a free-speech advocate on the subject of lolicon, loli-fanservice, et al either.

Also, where the heck is Shikabane Hime episode 26? Is Gainax holding it hostage or something? Must I wait for the DVDs?

    Andrew on says:

    Theres only 25. 13 from season 1 and 12 from season 2.

That I can totally agree with. Most of the reviews I have read on ANN are just downright unjustified, the community that responds to the “grades” given in their reviews are just as worse. I only go there for the news.

    @Richard J.

Remember, to each his/her own. Reviews are nothing more than people hired to share their opinions on the content they’ve seen, its pointless. As for the loli/lolicon part: unfortunately it seems that they are still on that whole “loli is a bad concept to cater towards pedophiles and anyone who watches an Anime with such themes is one.” mindset.

    Richard J. on says:

@ Andrew: What the heck. . . That’s where it ends? That is so unfair. I mean, unless I missed an episode and didn’t realize it, which I’m darn sure I didn’t, it ended before the fight was even over. Did Gainax run out of funding or something?

Geez, I hope someone makes an OVA or a sequel or a movie or something. Still enjoyed it but wow, talk about an incomplete ending.

I use ANN for news and the encyclopedia. I was using their video section briefly, but then discovered most of the stuff they had was also available in other places (Hulu, Crunchyroll, or here, for example) and their player wasn’t that hot, so I went to the other places that had more user-friendly video players. :)

Like lots of other people have commented, I pretty much ignore reviews from any major news outlets. They usually have a particular taste and it usually doesn’t line up with mine. I get a lot more review mileage out of blogs run by people with similar tastes to mine.
