Toei Digital Partnership- Show#6: Pretty Cure

It’s been about a month and a half since we first announced the Digital Partnership with ToeiPretty Cure is the 6th series to be uploaded to FUNimation.com/Video.  I have yet to see a single episode of this show, so I’ll be sure to check it out.  Have you guys been watching any of the Toei shows?  What do you think?  Are you a fan of anime classics or a new anime snob? Pretty Cure If you’re like me and not too familiar with the series, here’s a little synopsis of what it’s about.  It actually sounds like a pretty fun show.

Pretty Cure – This series revolves around Nagisa and Honoka, eighth graders at the Verone Junior High School for girls, who encounter two mysterious creatures that came down from the sky one night. Named Mepple and Mipple, the creatures fled their homeland, known as the Field of Light, in order to escape an attack by the evil forces of Dotsuku Zone. They grant Nagisa and Honoka the power to transform into superheroes dubbed “Cure Black” and “Cure White,” who may be our planet’s only hope in battling the evil Dotsuku Zone.

This one’s actually not that bad for being a Magical Girl show. Once you get past the product placement (which is in every magical girl series, really), it’s pretty good. The girls actually fight back against the monsters and bad guys through physical contact, rather than simply generally relying on Magical Abilities and using those all the time. Most of the time, they do finish them off with a special attack though.

My only issue is… well… The materials that Toei supplied you guys. Unfortunately, instead of redoing the subtitles onto better masters, they simply redumped the Nippon Golden Network tapes and uploaded those. Whatever the source of those tapes were, they have some annoying hissing. Some episodes are better than others.

    Ah well.

Having said that, atleast it’s up and available for free for people who want to check it out.

Pretty Cure is a show that I’ll probably look into sooner or later. That should leave only Air Master for next week to finish off the Toei streams, but hopefully FUNi will team with Toei more in the future… Ring ni Kakero 1, please!

As for other Toei shows that are being streamed I am watching Digimon Adventure 02, especially considering that this year is the 10th Anniversary of the original Digimon Adventure. Hopefully something can happen for Adventure 02 next year to help celebrate its 10th Anniversary… Uncut DVD release , please?

Hooray! I’ve been anticipating this for a bit now. Toei also had a display/play area of one of the spinoffs of this show….yes precure 5 i think? As you might guess i like to make fun of magical girl shows but I do really like them and Toei seems to know what they’re doing when it comes to franchises. They keep it to a formula but still manage to add something new….I can’t put my tongue on it just yet having only seen the first episode( Sorry I’m trying to burn through Galaxy Express as fast as possible) but i liked it.

Pretty Cure is the only show I’m interested in from this Toei partnership. So I’ll be sure to watch it. It’s too bad we can’t get something like GeGeGe no Kitaro that would really benefit from this kind of distribution.

To answer your questions i finished watching Fist Of The North Star 1 today and in my opinion it was excellent (i’ll get to 2 next week) and i don’t mind classic or modern anime as long as the plot and direction are good.

As for Pretty Cure, i’ve been waiting for this since the Toei deal announcement and due to Crunchyroll’s 1 free episode a week schedule (at the time) i decided that i was to watch episodes 21-49 here since i’ve seen 1-20 on there and enjoyed it a lot so now that they’re up i’ll start watching them later (and keep hoping for uncut DVDs if the Toei deal works outs well 8) ).

Pretty Cure was the only of the Toei series that really caught my attention. No snobbery involved, I’ll watch anything old or new, this just happened to be the only one that jumped out at me.

I hope the materials you got aren’t quite as bad as Mendinso indicated. (And if any DVDs were to ever come out in the future, I hope the best material could be gotten.)

Personally, I’d like to see Toei stop messing around and grant Funi the big series digital deals like for One Piece.

No school like the old school, seriously I have been watching a lot of older stuff recently(Chouja Reideen, Rose of Versailles, Slam Dunk, Captain Harlock), really newer anime are okay but it seems the older shows have more heart.

I still am wondering if Air Masters will be added since it is nowhere on Crunchyroll.

Hooray that you got this, great to see it available for free :)

Boo for the crappy masters they gave you.

This series is well worth watching though, so if you’re not put off by hissy audio, go watch it.

    @Mitamaking

Air Master should be added next week since that’s the next and final show off the list of Toei anime from this deal.

I’ve watched episodes 1-5 so far and Pretty Cure is quite good. The hissy audio and non-Funi subs aren’t good but the show is very enjoyable with fun leads. Nagisa is so far my favorite. I agree with her mild irritation at the transforming Mepple and Mipple. (Those two creatures need a cold shower. )

I like Honoka but so far I haven’t quite gotten into her head enough.

I love series where evil infects regular objects and we get freakish, surreal monsters to fight. The Vacuum of Evil was awesome. (Loved how when it was sold later it still had Nagisa’s foot imprint.)

Wish this were getting a Funi dub and an uncut-DVD release. I know it’s getting dubbed and released in Canada but name changes irritate the daylights out of me. (Though they are nothing compared to the new opening. Ick. Funimation knows how to do English songs right but apparently whoever worked on that one doesn’t.)

One thing I like so far is that although it’s a bit episodic, the episodes flow together. It feels more like chapters in a book rather than stand alones. I really hope this stream will get people interested in the series again and maybe generate enough revenue and interest that a DVD release (please with dub) becomes a reality.

Come on Toei, this deal is already a damn good decision, make it pure epic win!

Anyway, here’s hoping for more magical girl licenses, especially dubbed ones, in the future. (HINT: I want Nanoha StrikerS licensed and dubbed please.)

    Rojas on says:

The plans for a DVD release depends on the property. When we provide the Press Release on FUNimation.com, you can read the details on what rights have been acquired. Some shows are purely a digital acquisition like Phantom where we only have the rights for digital streaming. That’s not to say we won’t get DVD distribution rights in the future, but we won’t know until later.

    Richard J. on says:

Speaking of digital deals, why aren’t all of the series that Funimation has digitial rights licensed getting put up on the video portal, YouTube, Hulu or whatever other legal digital site? (When I say all, I mean the ones that have been licensed for a while, not brand new licenses. Obviously ya’ll can’t do everything instantly.)

Actually, if you could share some insight with me on how the digital stream version of a show is made, I’d be most grateful.

I just finished watching it and other than the hissing noise issue and the Max Heart preview being kept in the last episode when that season is not in the list of shows (damn Toei) this show overall was indeed awesome.
