I have had season 1 forever but have not watched it yet. (No Time) I am gonna get season 2 when it hits in August and then I will watch seaon 1 and 2. I seen 1 episode and that’s what sold me from what I saw it was really good so I bought the set.

The first season of GSG is one of my all-time favorites. I plan to ignore all the bad-mouthing the second season got when I watch it. Sure it’s done by a different studio, so the visuals are different. It’s still the same characters that I love. I’ve been waiting for this for 4 years. 8O

My readers definitely seem to prefer the first season to the second– though they make the interesting point that since FUNimation is reportedly keeping the same cast in the second season, it’ll actually be less jarring a change for dub fans than for sub fans. I thought that was kind of cool :)

It is nice to have the rare advantage over sub fans. While the other companies are just getting more and more sub-focused, Funi keeps doing right by us. It’s a nice thing and I reward it as best I can.

Truth be told, I don’t expect to be buying from any of the other companies, save perhaps VIZ to finish long shonens, by next year’s end. (That will be when most or all of the shows I really want from the other companies are finished.)

It’s situations like with GSG 2 and the casting for FMA’s OVA and, I assume, FMA: B that remind me that Funimation actually cares about dub fans. Yes, they care mostly about the money we exchange for their product but if they didn’t care about us at all, they wouldn’t bother trying to get old casts back together. Look at EVA 1.0 for instance, they could have released it sub-only or just used whoever they had for all the roles and instead they tried to get back the first English cast. They couldn’t get everyone but they got some and they made the effort. That really says something about them as a company.

Sorry to ramble about that but I really feel the need to praise them for this sort of thing lately. When I first heard about Gunslinger Girl 2 being made, I was so happy because I loved the first series. In fact, it was my very first anime purchase!

Then the Japanese screwed fans royally by using a different studio, weaker animation, a different Japanese cast and generally creating an inferior product by all accounts. So, when Funimation licensed it and made the effort to use the same English cast, I honestly felt like they cared about fans. Certainly they can be said to care more than the Japanese themselves.

I do wonder what happened with the OVA episodes though. I’ve never heard if they were licensed or not. (My only concern.)

Anybody who read the Gunslinger Girl manga can tell you that Teatrino is much more faithful to the manga. Many of the episodes go virtually panel-for-panel, and the character design mirrors that of the manga.

So yeah, to people who never read the manga, Teatrino may seem like an abrupt change from the first gunslinger girl series by Madhouse. However, as long as you don’t focus everything on animation and art, I think most people will agree that the story conveyed in Teatrino is much more full and better told than the first series, especially since it has the awesome Pinocchio.
