@UmmYeahOk, My sister went to Courtland High when I was there (mid 80's). But I was only ever at Spotswood Elementary (grades 1-5, I moved in February of my fifth grade year). They were just starting to get to the point that they were expanding and building new schools when I moved away. The only thing I remember about Courtland, is they used to have paw prints painted on the road leading up to the school. And since Courtland was the Cougars, Spotswood was the Cubs.

@Richard, What do you mean erase? I know Disney wanted to make a historical park. I dont see anything wrong with that. I mean, Do you think Busche Gardens destroyed the historic Williamsburg? I know when I returned in 1999, much more of Fredericksburg was developed. I cant see anyone needing to move there unless they had to work in DC or Richmond. To be honest, thats probably why we had to move. Theres just not any local jobs that not in the retail/food industry that is.

Then again, in 1990 our neighborhood was developed on that battlefield, so I dunno. Its historic, but practically ALL of that area was at one point used for something historically. Cant preserve everything, especially if its just land and nothing more.

@Pearl, I went to Chancellor Elementary K-3rd. I think my best friend may have gone there. I dont remember, I remember a bunch of people including teachers transferring. Im not sure what elem or middle school she went to, but she eventually went to Chancellor High, then Courtland. Class of 2000. Did you go to any of these?

@UmmYeahOk, Holy shiznit. :) I also used to live in Fredericksburg, and went to Spotswood Elementary. :) My mother was president of the Historical Fredericksburg Foundation Inc., the organization that puts on the Candle Light Tour every year. When I lived there she dragged me to every Civil War site in the state. :) And it's always fun to be playing in the dirt and finding civil war musket balls, ne?

And yes everything is historical... I mean you have colonial history, revolutionary war history, civil war history. :)

@ UmmYeahOk: Yeah, Virginia is the place for historical field trips. The battle grounds and the National Park musuems are amazing. It's really too bad there's such a strong movement to erase all of that history.

@ Rojas: That video was so wrong. Yet so funny. I like slapstick in small doses where you don't see it coming. I mean, I've never even heard of someone using a loaf of French bread like that! (Only thing funnier would have been if it kept being chopped and you had to keep buying more, like poor Charlie Brown.)

@Pearl, Where did you live? For a brief period I live in the Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania area. I loved all those field trips. Although I cant seem to remember if I went as a student, a girl scout, a bored local, or just as a tourist. Last time I went, it was in 1999 as a tourist. Thats the thing about Virginia, EVERYTHING is historical! Even my house was built on the old civil war battlefield. I used to play in the old trenches after school.

I think 4th and 7th grade is when you learn state history in school, only I moved away in 3rd. The state I am now however, its history was mostly how it used to be almost half the size of the US, its own country, and how it should, once again, become its own country. No field trips whatsoever  :x

When I visited in 1999, I revisited all these great places, and my mom got me a Bastille Key necklace charm from the Mt Vernon Gift shop. Since it represented freedom I wore it for several years, even to Paris. No one seem to know what it was, other than just an odd looking key. Not even when I was right outside the Bastille. In fact, in college I took a course on the French Revolution, and they never even brought up the whole key and Washington story. :?

@UmmYeahOK, wow that brings back memories of elementary school field trips to Mt. Vernon. But talk about lame, it was a repeat field trip for me - I went once in the second grade, as well as the fourth grade. And of course every time we had family visit from out of town, that was one of several places we always took them. :) I swear I went to Mt Vernon at least twice a year for the 5 years I lived there. :)

Looks like Young finally got his revenge for your Scarborough Fair victory. And as I remember the video correctly, it ended with the caption "Marketing Wins!!! This round..." Looks like the Art Dept got you back in this one.

Oh, and I just wanted to let everyone know, should any one here be casted for the new National Treasure 3 (2011) that the Bastille Key, the historic symbol of liberty, still hangs in the hall of Mount Vernon where George Washington placed it. It is the key to the west portal of the Bastille, long used as a political prison, in France. When the Paris prison was stormed, it marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The Marquis de Lafayette, who had served under Washington in the Revolutionary War, sent the key to Washington in 1790.
