To say you’ve never heard of Saiunkoku?  Mario1-7, you should be in shame for that.  It was recently named in Chris Beveridge’s 10 most underrated anime for 2008, and has a berry nice dub (Brad Swaile, Kelly Sheridan, else).  Otherwise, it’s best to look it up for yourself on the Saiunkoku website.

Been looking forward to this one :) I might pick up a couple of copies, to encourage the second season getting licensed. I love historical-fantasy-shoujo-romance shows.
    And of course…Spoiler ▼

I mean, not really, I don’t like shows with boy love at all, but I was able to enjoy it. Then again, I only got to episode 13 so far.

    Joie on says:

It’s not really boy love. There are some male-male friendships that could be interpreted either way. And there’s some confusion/joking about one of the main characters who is said to be gay at the beginning (and is probably bi), but who in reality spends most of the show chasing a woman.
Either way, it’s a great show. I highly recommend it.

    Richard J. on says:

Joie is correct. While the show teases with boy’s love, it’s actually not. Though, frankly, there is some subtext. Main reason to watch though is Kelly Sheridan’s awesome Shurei. She’s smart, she’s tough and she’s a great example for young girls if you ask me.

Also, watching Ryuki attempt to court her at one point with gifts that range from daily love letters to a voodoo doll is just plain fun. So many interesting characters too.

I’ll probably switch to the box set at some point but I’ve already got the early singles and the two partial sets.

Such a great show, I loved it. (And would love to see season 2 licensed…)
Too bad I already bought it all. I like the looks of that box set. And that calendar!

    Pearl on says:

@dudefx – not really, it just kinda has some comedy at points as one of the characters thinks something is going on between certain characters, but is just really misinterpreting things. I think since this is a josei title, just as Ouran kinda does a nod and a wink to the female fans by making fun of the yaoi stereotypes (without being a boys love title), this show does too every once and a while.  :)   The story is all about our heroine, Shurei’s perseverance and struggle to achieve her goals (to become a civil servant), and to help the people of her country. There’s some political intrigue, a flavor of the supernatural, a bit of a love story … and dashes of humor for seasoning. :) She’s really a heroine you can get behind and cheer for.

They’re not gay. But they might be.

This show is very Fushigi Yugi, but the heroine is worlds more likeable.

Wow, it’s a good day for Saiunkoku. Lots of exposure. I hope this box set sells well – so we can get season two!

    Hisoka-Thorongil on says:

Hey, I’m a male, not really a “bishi lover,” and I adore this show (as well as certain BL titles, even though this particular show isn’t one). Saiunkoku is well-written, well-animated, and has a splendid setting with memorable characters (especially Shurei!).

    Oh, and ditto Hannah.

    BVL on says:

I highly recommend this show for anyone who loves shoujo/historical animes. Not only are the characters great, but so it the plot.

I would get the boz set if it were’nt for the fact that own 2/3 of it already on individual DVDS and 1 set. XD

Think of this show like Fushigi Yuugi and 12 Kingdoms crossed over. Only way better. XD
