FUNimation Virtual convention panel

October is one of those rare months where FUNimation is not exhibiting at any conventions. This makes me sad and want to kick puppies. To help deal with these sort of feelings we here in the office are going to hold our first live virtual convention panel tomorrow on this blog at 4pm CST.  This panel will be mostly Q & A but we may have a couple of other fun stuff as well.  This virtual panel will involve both live blogging text and streaming video.

Like any good panel we would like people attending to ask us some questions.  So if you can make it to the panel think up a few questions you always wanted to ask.  Rojas will be on hand picking questions for me to answer and we will try to get to as many as we can with in an hour or so.

If you have any questions about the panel (not for the panel, save those good ones for tomorrow) please let us know on this post.

Two general rules about the Q&A to help speed things up as well as get the best out of the time we have together
- Keep it clean.  if you are asking something you shouldn’t it won’t get posted and we won’t answer it
- You can skip all the, “Is FUNimation going to license (insert anime name or sequel for anime name here)?”  We can’t answer any of these questions since we can’t say what we have licensed until, well, we announce we licensed it.

Still talking about conventions, here is a fine list of conventions going on this weekend that we are supporting and you should attend if it’s in your area.

@Corey Lucas: I would stray away from casting questions. Not because they are bad questions but more because I won’t have all the lists in front of me.

@Chrisc: FUNi Con 1.0 does have a nice ring to it.

@Richard J: You can ask how a series is doing. No guarantee if that will make it through our ‘Rojas 2000’ filter but it is worth a shot. You are correct that we can’t give you any numbers but generalities we are fine with. Ask as many marketing or process series questions as you want. We love those.

@Derek: Don’t have any info on more Claymore unfortunately.

@Mitamaking: Our ‘Don’t Panic!’ slide show is so 2008. J We won’t be doing a full slide show for this one since this is as much of sharing and talking with the fans as it is an experiment on getting everything to work right. Don’t want to try too many things the first time.

@Addicted2prs: if you are asking if the panel will be available to view after it takes place that is a yes. We will keep the text record of the panel on our blog as well as try and post the video portion to youtube very shortly afterwards.

@Tyrenol: The panel will be about an hour or so.

@Rich S: Guests are a maybe. Need to see who is available around this time.

I’m glad US anime industry is still alive, but I think that one of the biggest failure of the industry were 1) you have regarded fansub communities as “market” and that 2) you have offered many cheap (or free) products to that “fansubbaholic” “pirate” market. I’m afraid that if things go as they do now all anime contents will have to be free despite all the cost and/or labor that creators, staffs, and voice actors have spent.
Do you have a plan to make your market more profitable – I mean, let people buy not-too-cheap products as eagerly as Twilight fans? If you do have a plan, I’d like to hear what it is.
Thank you very much. I hope more people will show “true” respect for anime and anime industry.

    Kate on says:

I will be unable to make it due to work commitments but do have some questions I’d love to have answered  even if I can’t be there “live”:

    1.  What series was the most surprising success for Funimation and why do you think it was (a) successful and (b) a surprise?

Since I don’t know who the panel will be comprised of, I’ll ask a general question for any and all panelists.

    (2) What series was the most fun to work on and what series was the most personally satisfying to work on (and yes – those are two different concepts). And of course, why?

Have fun today.  Can’t wait to catch up on it.

@ Akira & Kate:  Those are all great questions.  Please be sure to ask some thing similar to these in the panel.  Or if you can’t make it see if someone who can will ask for you.

Since I live in the U.K. I’m a bit confused about time zone differences (iirc from the Soul Eater cast announcement, we’re about 5 hours ahead of you, right?) , so if I’ve got the time zones completely wrong, could you possibly hold on to these to answer when the panel begins?. Anyways, my questions are:

“Does FUNimation have any input into the release dates and/or style of releases (e.g. half season sets, individual volumes) of releases of their shows when they are distributed in Non-American territories by different companies? (e.g. Manga Entertainment’s release of Ouran High School Host Club in the United Kingdom)”

Also, I know you have a rule on not asking about licensing anime series’ (so tempting to ask, but I’ll be a good boy), but this isn’t about licensing particular titles, but rather an issue that comes with the licensing of shows (However, if you cannot answer it, then please ignore it) :

“As you know, your video portal site (www.funimaton.com/video) blocks out visitors from the United Kingdom due to copyright reasons. In the future, will FUNimation Entertainment try to obtain licenses to stream their shows worldwide (or at least to Europe as well), or will it continue to be U.S. and Canada only, with streaming licenses of particular shows going to particular distribution companies (if I remember correctly, Manga Entertainment is currently discussing the possibility of streaming “Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood” , so if that is true then it could mean such a thing could happen more often.) ?”

    Thanks.

It will start in 30 minutes sweet!! Can we ask how far you guy’s are in a series?

    pillowman on says:

Haha, everyone keeps asking questions here even though they won’t be answered.  If there isn’t any limit on how much one person can ask, though, I’ll ask your guys’ questions for you if you can’t make it.  (Especially since I’m interested in the answers to Kate’s ^^)
