FUNimation Acquires We Without Wings – Under the Innocent Sky

Flower Mound, TX (July 11, 2011) – FUNimation® Entertainment announced today that it has acquired rights to distribute the anime series “We Without Wings – Under the Innocent Sky.”  These rights include home entertainment, broadcast, digital and merchandise.  This romantic comedy, from director Shinji Ushiro (“Blessing of the Campanella”), revolves around a group of young people whose seemingly unconnected lives may be linked in an alternate world.

FUNimation will release the series on DVD and Blu-ray in 2012.  The official FUNimation stream of the series will be available beginning at 12:00pm CDT on June 24th, 2011 via www.funimation.com/video or directly at http://beta.funimation.com/we-without-wings.

About We Without Wings – Under the Innocent Sky:
Timid Takashi wants to escape to an alternate world where he is a heralded knight, but is held back by thoughts of his younger sister and his girlfriend. Part-timer and all around upbeat guy Shuusuke has a disastrous first encounter with a woman who turns out to be his new co-worker. Handyman Hayato is a hard-boiled loner that has random encounters with two gangs and a girl with a uniform fetish. Throw in plenty of fan-service, random humor, an alternate medieval world, and your narrator DJ Condor, and you get “We Without Wings – Under the Innocent Sky”.

    Onlera on says:

    @Hectotane, I think YOU need to “get off your high horse”, as you put it. Some people LIKE visual novels and that style of storytelling, even people in the US. just because you don’t like that style of game doesn’t mean it’s “work”. And you can’t deny that gaming has tended, in recent years, to releasing a lot of simple, violent FPS. that’s a large part of why people talk about the US gaming industry being too simplistic. It’s just a generalization, and it’s usually meant to emphasize that there are other types of games out there and people who like them. Oh, and I’m pretty sure the anime Air was based on a visual novel, and it was a truly beautiful series.

    Back on the subject of the release, I’m glad to see the announcement of an anime between these announcements of live action films. I hope FUNi is making money on these releases to keep them afloat, but I wish we’d get fewer live-action films and more anime series… Ah well

    @ Onlera:

    Yes, but my argument’s not about how games here are either too
    “complex” or too “simple.”

    My argument is about how “animu based on visual novels” fails to
    really *click* with the audience outside the otaku-base.

    ok hectotane go play 999 9 people 9 hours 9 doors and tell me all that, baning or hating something based on source material or genre is wrong, I also wonder if you have seen or played. steins gate, clannad, air, kannon, EF a tale of memories or melodies, ever 17 higurashi chaos head, ghost trick, or heck phoenix wright/ace attorney. my guess is not if not then you would see how people click with this type of story telling outside the otaku base. heck my theater fraternity’s president LOVES higurashi and she is hardly an anime fan.

    @Hectotane
    @The storyboarding and writing are usually pathetic. Like it’s done by either a NEET or a 5-year-old kid

    Name some shows that fall under this catergory.

    Why don’t you post this over on ANN or mania?

    You banned there or something? Or afraid of causing a shitstorm?

    tantei on says:

    atleast I am not afraid to say what I think to anyone, and can back it up

    Matt on says:

    No, my point being, clearly Hectotane wants to discuss this with people, and thus he should post this on an anime forum, instead of an anime blog where he knows most people who view said websites don’t post.

    dramanerd08 on says:

    Oh I have been wanting to watch this series it looks cute looking forward to see the subbed and dubbed.

    Hectotane on says:

    @Matt: “Name some shows that fall under this catergory.”

    (Inhales…)

    Clannad, Air, Kanon, Shuffle, School Days, When They Cry…

    Basically, every VN-based animu except Tsukihime and the first To Heart.

    “Why don’t you post this over on ANN or mania? You banned there or something? Or afraid of causing a shitstorm? (Clearly Hectotane wants to discuss this with people, and thus he should post this on an anime forum, instead of an anime blog where he knows most people who view said websites don’t post.)”

    It’s called “opinions.” Nobody likes them.

    Or, to rephrase, a group of nobodies who hate when you do anything other than stupidly nod and agree to what’s going on. “Opinions,” especially honest ones, tend to destroy “that otherwise pleasant sense of togetherness and community” which is, in truth, face and easily breakable.

    Opinions especially becomes a problem for non-Asian anime licensors (like FUNi). Because, you know… When you spend more money using the law to chase after people for “blowing the filter” and allowing other the chance to choose which anime to like (instead of being told what to like, like a dictatorship would do)…

    Well, hey. Maybe Phoenix Wright would’ve had a better chance if he participated in Street Fighter IV or Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. :P

    They’ll probably announce Hidan no Aria for DVD/BD here soon.

    Dear Funimation, don’t go blaming fansubs and streaming rips when you start going under next year.

    ok familiar of zero did not sell good ok so be it i at least bought my complete set when it first came out but really is show is not going to do any better i think it really stinks and it is my style show to i get must all ecchi show funimation get (vampire bund,baka,sekirei,mermaid ect.)but is the worst chose they made not getting here

    Max465 on says:

    @Hectotane: I’m not usually a big fan of VN based anime myself, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t people out there that enjoy them.

    Out of the list you mentioned I only like Shuffle and Clannad(Until the atrociously stupid ending that is). School Days and anything Higurashi related always felt stupid and plot less to me. Air was a generic harem without anything interesting to keep it going like Shuffle did. Never seen Kanon, so can’t judge it.

    Anyway, the point is, some people like this kind of thing, I know I’m looking forward to We Without Wing(Love the alliteration. XD), and I highly enjoy the plot of the show.

    If you can’t accept Funi dubbing these kind of anime, don’t watch them, and find someone who dubs/subs what you do like.

    Mitamaking on says:

    This was not the weekend to announce another plain harem Funimation, not the week you said you weren’t gong to release any more of something not so cliché. I don’t want this, and I miss Funi announcing stuff I want.

    Matt on says:

    @Hectotane

    So basically you hate anything thats popular right?

    Selfia on says:

    I love the debate (or perhaps hate-fest) going on above me.

    I don’t think licensing this show really fits with the Funimation image. Others like it that Funi has haven’t really done that well in sales and feedback. I have a feeling this is going to end up on the S.A.V.E. brand pretty quickly after release.

    This might just have been an easy acquisition compared to others that take time and work. I just put in good faith that titles that are more agreed upon will be picked up. I wish I knew the full process of acquiring a show…

    With that said I will just say that I don’t like this show at all but that’s just my beet.

  • 40
    Matt on says:

    @Selfia

    Maybe the aquisition manager for Funimation is secretly working for ADV(Sentai) to bring them down from the inside, thus when Funimation goes under and ADV returns to former glory, he/she will say Job done and join ADV.
    (Incase some people don’t realise, that was me joking)

    Rofl conspiracys theorys ftw.

    Okay in all seriousness, I don’t have an opinion on this title, but clearly there is more demand for Higurashi than there is for this anime, thus had Funimation announced they licensed Higurashi Kai/Rei, hundreds of fanboys/girls accross every forum will rejoice :P

    Maiku on says:

    Well I have no real opinion of this show. The plot sounds interesting but the show got pretty middle of the road reviews when it was airing so it can’t be terrible but probably isn’t the best thing ever either.

    I personally don’t mind anime based on Visual Novels and those that say all anime based on VN’s suck are idiots because there are so many based on VN there is a good chance that person likes a show that was based on a VN and they don’t even know it. Even hecatard had to concede and admit that there are good VN based anime(as he listed Tsukihime and To Heart which are indeed great shows)

    For those who think Funi is going crazy for having got this they have to remember there is more to getting a license then just going out and picking up the show. This could well have been part of a package deal and the other show that came with it will be shown at Otakon or Anime Expo(that is where funi shows off the biggest things they get each year)

    I will agree that it is kind of hard to find a pattern in what Funi licenses(alot of people think it has to have boobs and fan service but that isn’t the case as shows like Eden of the East, Summer Wars, Princess Jellyfish, Shiki and so on and so forth got licensed). To me personally it doesn’t matter. Funi releases enough stuff that I do have interest in while at the same time keeping themselves afloat so it’s not a big deal if they license a show you don’t like. Just don’t watch it. If they license something you do like then woo you get to buy it and enjoy it. No one forces you to buy what is released.

    tantei on says:

    middle of the road is a c average maiku or 3/5 this show has repeatedly gotten D’s and F’s (Even from Mania which almost never gives out Fs) due to poor animations and even worse execution, among other problems.

    also hectotane you didn’t 999 or half the stuff I brought up, though at least you stopped using generalities.

  • 43
    Selfia on says:

    @Matt

    XD lol, I do miss ADV titles and their brand.

    I’m wondering if this was just a very easy show to get. Seeing as there wasn’t a big demand for it I think other companies passed on it and Funi saw that it had some potential. Perhaps this just adds to the growing product mix that they development. However, key holing themselves isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

    I hate though that fans will see an acquisition like this and immediately think that because one show they dislike was licensed before another they do like, the latter is never ever going to get picked up. It’s just NOT the case. Not now doesn’t mean never.

    SilverPhantom on says:

    The plot in this seems good for me. I think I’ll check into this one.

  • 45
    Matt on says:

    @Maiku

    As always, you are the voice of reason, well said.

    @tantei

    In all fairness, reviews are just one persons opinion and shouldn’t be taken as fact unless pretty much everyone is saying the same.

    @Selfia

    I miss ADV too, must admit I was an ADV fanboy before they died, then after that Geneon, and lastly Funimation lol

    Yeah I fully agree this was likely a package deal, as you said, Funimation gets this with something else they’ve yet to announce.

    I think you’d agree that it wouldn’t matter what show Funimation licensed, people would still complain that their fav show is still unlicensed, thus some people don’t realise that Funimation don’t have infinite money(lol infinite gil).

    Such is life I suppose.

    I would love Funimation forever if they licensed Macross Frontier, thats one show that would sell ridiculusly well on Blu Ray, I would buy it in Singles format too.

    Also make me a sandwich :3

    So…. How many people have caught onto the fact, yet, that the entire time that Hectotroll has been on this site, he has only been purposefully attempting to be a rampaging elitist, selfish, idiotic tool, for the sole purpose of trolling everyone here, making everyone angry with his pathetic and hate-mongering comments, not because he believes them, but because he’s just amusing himself to make other people angry with his bullshit, and laughing to himself about it?

    Because you all know good and well that he’s only doing this for fun, and he’s purposefully being a raging, bullying, ignorant, entitled asshole towards the community just to get people’s goat. Why do you keep feeding this troll, when you KNOW he’s not here for intelligent debate? He’s here becuase it amuses him when his ignorance makes you angry at him.

    Good god, people. Figure it out. He’s a bully, he’s a troll, and he’s just some little punk possibly from Encyclopedia Dramatica, trolling anime fans because it makes his sad little failure-ridden life seem better by bullying other people to make himself feel superior. Ignore him and his trolling nonsense.

    The more you people reply to Hectotroll, the funnier he thinks it is, that his self-centered stupidity and hateful, pathetic, arrogance on subjects of which he clearly doesn’t know what he’s talking about on, feeds his blinding ego.

    Stop it. Stop feeding him. He’s a bottom feeding troll with no life, and he’s succeeding in making you angry with his idiotic nonsense. The more you try to talk to him like a civilized commenter (which he clearly isn’t) the more he “huh huh huh huh huh”‘s behind his computer and keeps on with his salvo of self-entitled ignorance and trolling pigheaded nonsense.

    You aren’t going to win with him because he’s only goading you all into making him feel more important or intelligent than he is, by passively-agressively frustrating you with his foolishness and straw-man debate-tactic trolling.

    I’ve seen it all before, and it’s obvious to anyone exactly what he’s doing. If you stop giving his trolling the ammunition he needs to keep going, he’lll get sick of pretending that “dem animu fans deserve to die huh huh”, and he’ll go away.

    Remember, this was the same Hectotroll who actually was happy and pleased that Japan was hit with earthquakes, and that the loss of thousands of innocent lives was “what they had coming for liking anime” and basically said “that will teach Japanese culture for being evil.”

    He’s a worthless douchebag that none of you should be wasting your time replying to. You’re all better than him. Or at least you should be. Please at least act like it, and just ignore his trolling crap and stop feeding him.

    @Karma

    Hectotane aka Tyrenol is a well known troll, no issues there. Back in the day he would be the one person on pretty much any thread/Funimation blog post to be wholely negative, like he was trying to bait a reaction from people/Funimation.

    I thought hes been banned from places like animeondvd(mania) and animenewsnetwork forums before, thus the new name?
