Evangelion 1.0

Mike and the team will do their best to answer as many questions as possible on Wednesday, May 27th. Please refrain from asking repeat questions to make them easier to go through, and stay on topic.

As I expected the orginal va’s for Shinji and Misato would reprise their roles. As for the other cast, I think that it was good casting Brina Palencia as Rei, because of her performance in Hell Girl. However I was shocked on how Kaworu was recast to Jerry Jewell. I thought Greg Ayres would reprise him. But I’m glad he is still in the film as Kensuke. Thought that would go to Todd Haberkorn. And for everbody else, I think they would all do. Can’t wait fot this film.
Has Funimation made any head way on getting the rights for the extra material in Evangelion 1.11? I think it would great if Funimation could get that licenced before, the dvds come out this November. Also, will Funimation do a limited screening through Fathom Events, or is Eva not popular enough? I hope you guys can get the rights to 1.11 in enough time to put on the 1.0 disc this fall.
Screening it through Fathom Events is an awesome idea. I’d definitely go! The screenings of the Death Note movies were really successful, and Evangelion has enough fans to match it.
I know she’s not in 1.0, but if/when you guys get the second film, for the love of god please keep Tiffany Grant as Asuka. >_>
Cool!
Ibuki is Hot! And Caitlin will do Justice. Mike Why did you cast her as Ibuki i want to know man. I mean your the Director of One Piece… did she remind you of Vivi? Answer back please
Spike Spencer is reprising his role as Shinji, all right in the world. No one in the dub world can out match him as Shinji, I say!! Also I agree with Nebs, get Tiffany Grant to reprise as Asuka, she did her very well!!!! I would love to see this in theaters, and will definitely drag my friends to see it. Eva is one of my favorite series and has remained so since I started watching anime ( I still have my dub vhs from this series, and the cost of three of those vhs tapes together were more expensive than buying the series in platinum complete) Also I think Outtakes for the dubbing might be fun to listen to, ouran high’s were down right hilarious!
Question for Mike and the team:
-Many of the roles have been re-cast from what they have been in previous iterations. Granted, this is a franchise with history and people move on to other industries, but even actors who are still very active in anime have either been re-cast (i.e. Greg Ayers from Kaworu to Kensuke) or not cast at all (i.e. Vic played Aoba in the director’s cut and is still active with Funi). Can you explain the casting philosophy (original vs. previous dubs), and the process along with the reasoning for some of the decisions? Thanks!
Question for Mike:
How much are you using the original television material as a guide for your direction and what kind of ideas did you have to make the dialogue unique from the original? To make it your own as it were. ^^
Mike’re you an “Evamonkey”? Was this an oppourtunity you just couldn’t pass up when the flick was licensed? I’m sure it’ll turn out amazing; I expect Taliesin is involved perhaps, hehe. Can’t wait to see it.
Just wanted to say,the cast list looks pretty good so far ! Hope we get to see the rest of the movies in time,on this side of the ocean, and in English….
Consider this another sale….Heck, actually consider it a future double dip,IF,its a BD release/DVD.
Eithier way,I’m buying.
I’m going to wish Funimation luck with this. Somebody’s psychological breakdown in anime form will never be my cup of tea, but hey.
My hope is that you guys will follow it up with something that’s non-otaku-bating yet includes as much fanservice as possible (i.e. anime where young men are not weak and spineless, but contains some panty shots).
Kudos to the casting, Mike I’d like to ask why you decided not to retain Vic Mignogna as Aoba, Monica Rial as Ibuki (But Cast her in another role), Greg Ayres as Kaworu (But cast him as Kensuke). I’m a little perfplexed especially with Kensuke because I really thought Todd Haberkorn would end up with that part and Greg would be Kaworu, why did you decide to change certain roles when the voice actors were available?
Well I want to be included!
Ok I said before I am not interested in Evangelion but I am gonna buy it to Support FUNimation, So my Question is can you guys promise a High Quality dub? I don’t have a problem with dubs sometimes some peoples voices leaves me in Despair, like one guy I don’t know his name but I know what characters he plays and I can’t stand his voice, but I know the guy is trying so I don’t complain to anyone I just suffer. Anyway can you guys promise a top notch dub?
Amanda Winn Lee I miss thee
Mike is a good choice for ADR, and Spike and Allison coming back are great news.
Now, Tiffany Grant must be Auska in 2.06454353245 or whatever number they come up with.
My question Is.
Do you have any plans to get the movie onto U.S television? It’l help DVD sales to no end.
What’s it like working on one of the worlds most well known anime series in movie form?
When funimation licenses the next movie, will you keep the same cast?
I’ll miss Amanda Winn Lee
. Happy both Spike Spencer and Allison Keith-Shipp are repriseing their roles though! They are the heart and soul of Eva, as far as the dub goes. And although we don’t have Amanda Winn Lee I’can’t imagine a better voice actor active today then Brina Palencia for Rei! I’ll miss Sue Ulu and her awesome technobable as Ritsuko, and the amazing Tristan MacAvery as Gendo, but what your ganna do? SHame you couldn’t get Matt Greenfield to direct it either, he is one of the best ADR directors in the biz, and the TV series was one of his great works! The cast looks good, I hope the dub sounds great! Please put it in theaters!!
Please, PLEASE keep the script accurate to the original source please. I fully trust in the great director that made Fullmetal Alchemist work, but hearing the awful mistranslation of ADV’s script really turned me off.
Question: Will Colleen Clinkenbeard be using a rendition of her Yuko voice from XXXholic?
AWESSSSOMMEE!!!! – I actually bought the sub or this and LOVED it (The only sub I’ve ever purchased!) – Please bring Tiffany Grant back for Asuka in the second film! (or atleast use Wendee Lee if Tiff isn’t available cause her hubby is the head of ADV).
“Evangelion” is to anime what the “Lord of the Rings” is to fantasy lit. (in My opinion)
– This is a BIG a Big Deal.
Brina Palencia as Rei? – I’m actually excited. I LOVED her in “Aquarion” and I love “School Rumber” so I’m glad she’s playing such an Iconic character- I enjoy Rei (in the series) but I am an Asuka man at heart so, I’d like to see what Brina does with Rei. **for the record yes, I honor & respect Amanda’s contribution to “Rei of ADV” but I recognize that was many years ago and I’m open to a ‘New Rei’ – as this is a re-engineering of the whole series.
Leah Clark! – Yaaaa! I’m glad she’ll be involved.
I’d have laughed my ass off if Funi dug-up and gave Tristan back the role of Gendou- lol. John Swasey is actually the voice from the Directors Cut ‘re-dub’ so he’ll do fine.
I’m not feeling Greg as KENSUKE. No one will replace the original – his level of Hyper-excitement was so memorable- but I’m Kensuke was never a ‘major player’ and more a buddy type so I’m willing to deal with it.
Alison!!!!
– she is the earth-mother of “Eva” You can re-cast the show with anyone but with Misato you need Allison Keith-Shipp. She’s part of the ’soul’ of Eva in it’s english form and you’d never hear the end of it if someone screwed up Misato.
SPIKE!…He’s gotta be wondering- “I gotta go thru all that again?” There’s only one ‘real Shinji’ and while I’d be happy to see a new voice paired with Brina – I’m happy he’s back. I’m just worried if he’ll be able to match the emotion and intensity he had the last two Dubs…He shouldn’t have to go thru this role for 4 more films- all that crying and screaming. I’d be fun to see him play off who plays Asuka.
Maybe they could bring in Brad Swail or Johnny Boosh for Kenji ??
I happy with ALL the choices and direction Funi’s going with this.
All I ask is that someone hire Doug Smith (Golden Boy) to so really fast past reaction shouting during the battle scenes….C’mon what’s a pulse pounding Eva scene inside NERV without Doug Smith’s nebulas voice floating in the mix – “Systems down! – we’re locked out!- Power re-connect ineffective! – it’s going Beserk!”- lol.
OMG…..have I missed English Eva.
Couple of questions: How did you choose the voice actors for the role? Try to get the ADV cast? If so, what happened to the ones that couldn’t get back?
Overall this cast for the rebuild movie looks spectacular, and can’t wait to hear it!
Another call of pleaseeeee tell us you’ll have Tiffany when you get to the second movie. I actually looked for that first since I for once have been a good girl and haven’t spoiled myself for once with summeries so now I get to be curious as to why Kaworu is in this one.
Love the cast, they all look wonderful and while I’m also curious as to why you did recast certain roles I’m looking forward to this even with as much as I loved the original cast.
You don’t know how happy I was when I saw that Spike Spencer and Allison Keith-Shipp was reprising Shinji and Misato!
Now all we need is for Tiffany to reprise Asuka and I will be a happy anime fan. I’ll miss Amanda Winn Lee as Rei but Brina killed it as Ai so it will be interesting to hear her as Rei. And 1 more thing. (as soon as you premiere it at AX and Otakon) Bring that bad boy to Canada!!
Looks good but where is Tiffany Grant? I liked her Asuka and Rei though the person cast as Rei this time around should also do a good job, I liked her perfomance as Eve in Black Cat.
