Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival

Must Read

Thanks to our pals at Japan Video in San Francisco, FUNimation had the pleasure of attending the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival last year. If you’ve never been to a Japanese festival, you should definitely put it on your bucket list. We hope to see those of you in the Northern California area at the Cherry Blossom festival in San Francisco’s Japantown. Here is some footage from our last trip.

You can see exhibits and demonstrations of ikebana (flower arranging), sumi-e (brush/ink painting), calligraphy, bonsai (tree dwarfing), origami, doll-making, and more. Traditional taiko performances, as well as more contemporary bands from the Bay Area, create “East meets West” entertainment for all to enjoy. A new 2013 Cherry Blossom Festival queen will even be crowned at a gala on Saturday evening, April 13.

And of course, Cosplay. Dress up as your favorite character, walk the parade, and recreate your favorite festival episode from an anime. You could wear a yukata, eat takoyaki, and try to scoop up a goldfish, all while pretending to save the world from aliens, evil demons, or giant robots.

FUNimation is sponsoring the event with prizing and will have a booth with free artcards and posters for you to take home. Keep an eye out for the big Goku fabric wall at the festival to find us.

The event takes place Saturday & Sunday, April 13-14 and April 20-21. Festival hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with some events performing later if necessary. Please check the Schedule of Events for complete update of times and events.

Everyone is invited to join in the festivities, which will be in full swing by 11 a.m. each day of the two-weekend celebration. Most events are free so bring your whole gang.
