Happy Mother’s Day! Anime has a whole range of parenthood, but it also has quite a few examples of great parents. Here are only a few examples of great mothers in no particular order. As always, there may be some spoilers in trying to explain why they’re great, so be warned. Many of these shows/movies can be found on Funimation.com!
Inko Midoriya
Deku’s Mom – My Hero Academia
Any kid in sports or other dangerous activity knows how doting moms can be. Imagine how much worse it can be when everyone is a super-powered mutant and your baby isn’t! But Inko from My Hero Academia is great as she pushes her son to achieve his dream even as he tries to find his own (danger-filled) path to becoming a hero.
Sanae Furukawa
Nagisa’s Mom – Clannad
Although her cooking isn’t the best and at times she gets a bit too sensitive, she easily is one of the best anime moms as she is the beacon of support that everyone goes to whether that’s immediate family, extended family, and even friends of family!
Bell-mére
Nami’s Adoptive Mom – One Piece
After finding a baby Nami and her sister Nojiko on a war torn battlefield, this woman adopted both girls to become tough ladies that learned how to hold their own. Her story brings forth one of the most emotional backstories for One Piece.
Ur
Gray and Lyon’s Adoptive Mom (and Ultear’s Real) Mom – Fairy Tail
At first glance, Ur doesn’t seem too caring as she trains her pupils pretty hard and could even seem neglectful depending on who you talk to. However, once you understand her past and the sacrifices she made not only for her children but for all people who live in Fairy Tail‘s world, you will see how magnanimous this woman is.
Erina Pendleton
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency
The amount of love this woman spans generations (haaaa) where she took care of her child and a adopted girl while alone, and she also supported and raised an unruly grandchild after the death of the grandchild’s father and the disappearance of the mother. How many people can say they have successfully taken care of 3 Jojo’s? Not Dio for one…
Hana
Yuki and Ame’s Mom – Wolf Children
Wolf Children is a great movie about motherhood that will pull tears out of any viewer. After becoming widowed in an unfortunate accident, Hana raises her transforming babies alone, fighting social stigma and learning new skills in order to protect her children. The whole movie emphasizes how far mothers can go to make sure their kids thrive.
Sachiko Fujinuma
Satoru Fujinuma’s Mom – ERASED
This single mom from one of the top thrillers of the 2016 winter season, ERASED, was an amazing mother as she constantly supported her son whether that meant helping him in achieving his dream career, helping him in solving a murder mystery, or in staying by his side for extended care-taking as he got in long-term disabling accidents.
Izumi Curtis
Edward and Alphonse Elric’s Adoptive Mom – Fullmetal Alchemist
Although the two protagonists of Fullmetal Alchemist, Edward and Al, have a mother that they go to lengths to revive from death, the boys consider this veteran alchemist a mother as well. Although her teaching methods were harsh and her temper was hair-trigger, she truly cared for the boys as she battled against supernatural forces to protect the boys and taught them the skills they would need to achieve their dreams.
Chi-Chi, Android 18, and Bulma
Dragon Ball Z
It’s hard to choose one good mom within Dragon Ball Z, so we chose 3! Whether these moms are fighting off the forces of evil or making sure their children get a good education, these moms are some of the best as they balance their often single-minded fathers and provide a very much needed balance their children need to become stronger heroes.
