The “Hungry Days” ad campaign run by Cup Noodles debuted its fourth and final One Piece-themed ad on February 6, and this one is something special.
Like the other ads, this 30-second spot is animated by legendary studio SHAFT, with character designs by manga artist Eisaku Kubonouchi (Carole and Tuesday, Chocolat) and features music by acclaimed J-rock band Bump of Chicken.
However, while the other ads focus on a modern-day high school take on Eiichiro Oda’s iconic characters, this one features a hyper-kinetic take on One Piece’s iconic Battle of Marineford. Per Anime News Network, this is the final One Piece ad in the “Hungry Days” campaign.
With one quick, frenetic cut after another, the ad shows the clashes between Ace and Akainu, Whitebeard and Aokiji, Marco and Kizaru, and Whitebeard and Blackbeard.
The War of the Best, which lasted from episodes 461-489 in the One Piece anime and chapters 552-580 in the manga, took place between the Marines and the Shichibukai and scores of pirates led by the Whitebeard Pirates who were both trying to rescue Portgas D. Ace, the Whitebeards’ 2nd division commander, from execution.
While this is a fun and exciting ad, your mileage may vary as to whether you like it more than the earlier, high school-focused ads. The first One Piece ad, airing this last May, showed a teen Zoro’s struggles in the kendo club. The second showed Nami struggling with the rigors of high school life, and the third showed a heartbreaking version of Vivi’s departure from the crew.
