Square Enix announced an anime adaptation of The World Ends with You this past July, gearing us up for another shot at life via the Reapers’ Game. Shortly after, Funimation confirmed the series would stream on their platform in 2021.
And now, a 90-second trailer has been revealed and we. are. PUMPED.
Fans will immediately recognize the visuals and the “fish out of water” vibes that series protagonist Neku Sakuraba gives off. Shibuya is both familiar and oddly unsettling. There’s something not quite right, but the trailer ends before Neku gets to figure out what, where, when, why and how cars and people are going through him.
Perhaps the official Twitter account can help? To celebrate the trailer, @TWEWY_PR is running a seven-day campaign where fans have to attempt to solve a mystery. At the end of the week, fans can check to see if they got it right.
That seven days is a reference to the Reapers’ Game we mentioned, and failing in The World Ends with You leads to players being erased. We’re fairly certain this real-life version of the game is safe.
The World Ends with You The Animation is being directed by Kazuya Ichikawa, with a screenplay being adapted from the 2007 Nintendo DS game by Midori Goto.
Fans of the game will be happy to see that Tetsuya Nomura and Gen Kobayashi (character designers) along with Takeharu Ishimoto (music director) are returning to work on the anime.
Koki Uchiyama (Neku), Anna Hachimine (Shiki), Subaru Kimura (Beat) and Ryohei Kimura (Joshua) are also reprising their roles, with Ayana Taketatsu (Rhyme) reprising her role from voicing the character in Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance!
