Get ready to make some noise! The official Japanese Twitter account for The World Ends With You The Animation just posted a new visual, and it IS AWESOME.
This new visual is almost an exact opposite of its Nintendo DS (and Nintendo Switch) counterpart. Gone is the black-and-white city vibe, replaced with a Shibuya that looks like it’s in the middle of a Splatoon match.
Our main cast of characters find themselves surrounded by frogs, wolves, crabs, and…Daddy shark? Fans of the series will recognize these creatures as “noise,” adversaries that our characters face as they play the Reapers’ Game. We’re not sure if the colors beneath each shadow represent blood, but we’re betting there’s a reason why the colors differ depending on the character and the attacking creature!
Additional cast members were also announced today, many of whom are reprising their roles from the original game, including:
- Kenjiro Tsuda as Sanae Hanekoma (New to the cast!)
- Satomi Arai as Uzuki Yashiro
- Anri Katsu as Koki Kariya
- Kenji Takahashi as Yodai Higashizawa
- Takayuki Fujimoto as Sho Minamimoto
- Hitomi Nabatame as Mitsuki Konishi
- Hiroshi Shirokuma as Megumi Kitaniji
While most of the cast and behind-the-scenes crew are The World Ends with You veterans, director Kazuya Ichikawa has stated some parts of the story will be changed for the anime. One change includes Shibuya itself.
To keep up with the modern feel of the series, we’ll be getting a modern day setting versus late ’00s Shibuya, complete with updated tech throughout the story. We’ll have to wait to see what other changes are made when The World Ends with You The Animation streams here on Funimation in 2021.
Based on the Square Enix action RPG for the Nintendo DS, The World Ends with You The Animation takes place in modern-day Shibuya as its cast plays a literal game of life or death—or maybe we should say that it’s a game of “existence erasure, returning to life, or transcendence into a higher being.”
