The world of parenthood is a magical, beautiful and often challenging place. It has its highs and its lows, similar to the world of anime. Of course, that’s without the magical outfit changes. Wouldn’t that make getting ready in the morning so much easier?

As a single parent to a 10-year-old son, I sometimes use anime as a way to connect with him. Anime is something we mutually enjoy and is a great medium to discuss subjects without the pressure of feeling too serious. The aim of A Mom’s Guide to Anime is to use anime to help you navigate the world of parenthood.
This month’s focus: Self-care for parents. That’s you! So far, A Mom’s Guide to Anime has been focused on the kids. But in a moment of emotional honesty, I’ll have you know that sometimes I need something to chill out with and decompress.
So this month, I want to recommend five anime series just for you. As parents, it can sometimes feel like we’re dealing with a lot, and you might not have the time to practice self-care. Well, take these shows into consideration and spend some time alone with some anime favorites.
A classic drama like The Count of Monte Cristo: Gankutsuou
If this title sounds familiar, you probably studied it in school. The Count of Monte Cristo: Gankutsuou is a reimagining of the French classic, The Count of Monte Cristo.
Gankutsuou still follows the story of Edmond Dantès and his grand scheme for revenge, but with a colorful sci-fi twist. The series is visually stunning, from its character designs and special effects to its immaculately detailed worlds.

These things are enough to make it worth a watch, but what makes it the perfect kid-free anime? Well, the series deals with adult themes of revenge and greed, showing just how far people are willing to go to get what they want—and the consequences that follow. Of course, nudity, blood and harsh language are all a part of this, so this is definitely a “watch when alone” series.
And if you’re familiar with the original tale, you’ll really dig the twist, which I will not spoil for you. Episodes of this anime run a bit long, so make sure you pair it with a nice glass of wine and a night to yourself. Enjoy!

A horror series like Junji Ito Collection
This one might be a bit obvious as to why it’s for you and not the children—it’s terrifying! But if horror is your thing, then Junji Ito Collection is an anthology series made for you.
Ranging from beautifully haunting to simply grotesque, the nightmare fuel of this series borders on masterful with its use of sound and suspense, adapting some of Junji Ito’s legendary tales.

And each story is focused on a different fear. There’s the obvious ones like ghosts and monsters, but the series also looks at death, love and vanity, with interesting takes on things like dreams, the concept of time and hypnotic suggestion.
We recommend watching this one at night, wrapped tight in a blanket for that full spooky effect! Or in the brightest of daylight, just to be safe.

A timeless space western like Cowboy Bebop
Look, there are plenty of fans who watched this series when they were kids or teens. But I must do my due diligence! The show does have adult themes, which not all parents feel is appropriate for the children. My son is aware of the series, but hasn’t watched it quite yet.
Cowboy Bebop is a classic western told in space, following an unlikely group of bounty hunters and a very good doggo. The characters all have complicated and complex pasts, and their baggage creates some hilarious and sometimes dangerous scenarios.

It’s also an action-packed epic, exploring things like martial arts, space battles, noir and military combat. But the series also excels at simple moments with the aid of its incredible soundtrack.
Cowboy Bebop will utterly capture you. And you will most likely watch it all in one sitting.

A fan service fantasy like Rosario + Vampire
Don’t let the cute and colorful characters fool you! This one is not for kids. But, Rosario + Vampire is perfect when you just want some time to yourself to watch something quirky and ridiculous. It is pure fan service.
There’s a klutzy main character, which in true form makes him the object of every girl’s affection. But these are monster girls, and they’ll use power and lust to sway him! Did we mention high school shenanigans and running gags?
Rosario + Vampire knows exactly what it is and does not take itself too seriously. Keep in mind, the series does have its controversial moments, but overall, it’s a fun series that will make you laugh. Oh, plus vampires and musical numbers.
