Mecha fans, get excited! It looks like Sunrise Beyond and BANDAI SPIRITS are teaming up for something special later this year.
The two companies have officially announced Kyoukai Senki, a new mecha anime series set in 2061 that follows a cast of characters in occupied Japan under the thumb of trade blocs. With their home now a place of war and oppression, it’s up to a young boy named Amo Shiiba and his newly acquired AMAIM war machine to take back Japan.
In addition to a look at Amo and his companion Al Gai, we also got a glimpse at Gashin Tezuka, a teenager aligned with the Japanese resistance. Similar to Amo, he pilots an AMAIM—though, he’s looking for revenge on his father’s killer.
The series will be directed by Nobuyoshi Habara (Star Blazers 2202) at Sunrise Beyond, with a stellar crew that includes Kenichi Ohnuki (Golden Kamuy) as character designer, Noboru Kimura (Gundam Build Divers) as script supervisor and Rasmus Faber (Moriarty the Patriot) as music composer.
And perhaps the most interesting note is that the mechanical design of the series is being overseen by Ken Okuyama, an industrial designer known for his motorsport and Shinkansen train designs.
Kyoukai Senki is set for a Japan release later this year.
