Hello, again! It’s your friendly neighborhood advice-giver, Yali. Last time, we talked about how my new relationship was going, after not having dated anyone for over seven years. And good news, we’re eight months strong! And, let’s be honest, that’s pretty good for being in quarantine.
Speaking of quarantine, if you’re finding it hard to get creative with date nights at home, know that you are not alone. After you’ve played every board game, almost ruined your relationship with Mario Kart and cooked a recipe you saw on Tasty, the dating fatigue will likely set in!

This sparked a question for me: What anime would be perfect for date night? What anime could inspire a future date night? The good news is that there are plenty of anime you can watch with your significant other that can spark your curiosity. You’re welcome, in advance.
Let’s jump in to some of my picks for the perfect anime date night!
Solve a mystery together like in Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace

Rampo Kitan: Game of Laplace is a series inspired by the works of Edogawa Rampo. Not familiar with him? Think of him as an Edgar Allan Poe-type—a master of Japanese mystery fiction.
The series is about a middle school where a collection of murders occur, but there aren’t any obvious suspects. These mysterious crimes draw the attention of a genius detective, Akechi, and a student, Kobayashi, who volunteers to help solve the mystery.

Rampo Kitan will send you down a rabbit hole of twists and turns, where you and your partner can work together to solve the mystery or compete to see who can crack it first! And if you want to continue solving mysteries, maybe you can pick up an escape-room-in-a-box or the Unsolved Case Files board game.

Learn a new sport like in HANEBADO!

There aren’t many activities we can do indoors right now, but depending on where you live, it might be safe to enjoy some sports outside! One sport, in particular, is badminton. (I used to play in high school.)
HANEBADO! follows Ayano Hanesaki as she pursues her dream of playing badminton. With her supportive coach, Tachibana Kentarou, and her partner, Nagisa Aragaki, she works hard to overcome her doubts on and off the court.

I picked this series because its characters are very real and relatable. Even the badminton matches aren’t cutesy—they’re the real deal. Intense showdowns will have you on the edge of your seat, and by the end, you’ll not only grow super-attached to Ayano and Nagisa, but you might just want to play badminton yourselves. And you can!
Badminton sets are rather inexpensive and the sport is easy to pick up and learn. Play together outside for a fun and sporty date night!

Check out karaoke or rap battling like in HYPNOSISMIC -Division Rap Battle- Rhyme Anima

A rap battle anime!? Trust me when I say, this show has the goods! HYPNOSISMIC is about four rival rap groups battling it out for territory in Japan. Remember, this is anime, so the battles take things a step further than just rhyme and rhythm.
Battles for turf are fought with tools known as hypnosis mics. These special microphones have the power to affect the human spirit, and rap is now used to solve conflict.

You might be wondering, why did I pick this show? Well, there are a couple of reasons. First, it’s perfect for a recurring watch where you pick up a new episode every week. But second, they are spitting straight fire! The raps are entertaining, and each character specializes in something different.
And what’s even more fun is trying out a rap battle (or even just karaoke) with your partner! You can even include your friends and host it on Zoom. You might not be able to sing at a bar just yet, but you can make home feel just as fun.

Dive deeper into your relationship like in Horimiya

Depending on how long you’ve been with your partner, you might feel like there are still some things you don’t know about each other. So why not watch an anime about characters revealing things about themselves they usually keep hidden from everyone else? It’s a powerful force called love!
Horimiya is a romance/slice of life series that is just so cute, you’ll barely be able to stand it! Hori is little-miss-perfect that everyone loves, but underneath her hyper-feminine image, she’s a bit of a blunt tomboy. Wait…that sounds like me! And Miyamura hides a gentle heart—along with piercings and tattoos.

In a chance meeting, the two reveal a side to each other that they’ve never shown. Together, they begin to question why they hide it, and yes, they fall in love. After all, the best part of a relationship is feeling comfortable with one another, so why not learn more?
To get started, maybe write a bunch of questions on pieces of paper and put them in a bowl. Then take turns asking and answering! You’ll find that there’s still more you can learn about and from each other.
