Kate Sánchez of But Why Tho? agrees that those character moments are powerful.

Mugen Train manages to bring beautiful and violent animation, a thrilling soundtrack, and emotional character moments that showcase the resiliency of humanity…” she said. “…and more importantly, the strength it takes to maintain it.”

On Twitter, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba fan TurtleHall put it a even more succinctly.

One character in particular made an impression on both audience members and critics: Rengoku.

“Rengoku has a surprising amount of emotional impact that slowly builds a connection to the audience before you even notice,” says The Observer. “His backstory is tragic without feeling soapy, his personality pops up the instant he’s on-screen, and his fighting skills are awe-inspiring.”

Den of Geek agreed, and found Rengoku’s scenes some of the most thrilling.

Mugen Train really becomes more of a story for Rengoku than anyone else. He shares the spotlight with Tanjiro, but Rengoku has more to both lose and gain through all of this,” writes Daniel Kurland.

And you can always count on Twitter to sum it all up in one statement.

Of course, this is Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, so it’s not just heavy emotional moments from your favorite characters that you can expect from the well-balanced blockbuster.

“When it’s fun, it’s fun, but when it’s time to get serious or tug at the heartstrings, Demon Slayer: Mugen Train does exactly that,” sums up The Mary Sue.
